Taylor Swift has publicly recounted the circumstances surrounding her speech at the wedding ceremony of her longtime friend, Selena Gomez, while clarifying certain details regarding its content.
Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday — shortly after Gomez shared previously unseen photographs from her wedding to music producer Benny Blanco — the 35-year-old singer confirmed that she indeed delivered a speech during the event. However, Swift expressly denied reports suggesting she had made reference to her own engagement to NFL player Travis Kelce, 36, or joked about Gomez marrying first.
“So I did make a speech,” Swift stated, “but I actually made a point not to mention anything about my engagement. Nobody wants you to be like, ‘Hey, I know this is your wedding day but…’” she added humorously, gesturing toward her engagement ring, which is reportedly valued between $700,000 and $1 million. Fallon agreed, remarking that the day rightfully belonged to Gomez.
Swift elaborated that her remarks focused instead on fond memories of her friendship with Gomez, recalling their teenage years and fashion choices from 2008, the year they first met. She noted that her intention was to celebrate the bride, emphasizing that her speech was “not about me.”
The Grammy winner went on to describe Gomez as “the most elegant, gorgeous, and radiant bride” she had ever seen, expressing admiration for her poise and happiness. Speaking of Blanco, Swift added that he was “so funny” and “the best,” offering warm words for the newlyweds.
During a subsequent segment on the show, Fallon engaged Swift in a game involving several rumors about her, with only one being accurate. Among the false claims was the assertion that Gomez had “beaten her to the altar.” Swift clarified that the only true rumor was that her close friend Ed Sheeran learned of her engagement via Instagram.
The appearance coincided with Gomez posting a video from her wedding day that captured Swift filming and gushing over the bride as her veil was being adjusted. In the footage, Swift exclaimed, “Are you even serious right now? Look at her. Oh my God!” to which Gomez replied, “I’m so happy, I’m getting married — finally!”
Fans responded enthusiastically online, celebrating the pair’s enduring friendship and describing it as a testament to “queens supporting queens.”#newsafro_
