Afrobeats recording artist, Ms. Tiwa Savage, has provided clarification regarding two matters of public interest: (i) her rejection of the designation “Queen of Afrobeats,” and (ii) her past experience in a personal relationship with a fellow public figure, which she characterizes as having been conducted in a manner she deemed disrespectful.
In an interview on the Joe Budden Podcast, Ms. Savage disclosed that the unnamed individual, also a public figure, expressly requested that their relationship be kept private, citing a preference that the association not be made known to the public. While she initially acquiesced to this arrangement, she later found the circumstances untenable, particularly as the individual engaged openly with other women in her presence under the pretext of avoiding public suspicion.
According to Ms. Savage, during events attended jointly, the individual would interact closely with others—described as “talking, rubbing, and working the room”—while simultaneously maintaining that such conduct was necessary to protect the confidentiality of the relationship. She recounted that these actions occurred in her presence and left her unable to object without undermining the purported rationale offered by the individual.
Ms. Savage emphasized that, although she has refrained from identifying the party in question, such experiences contributed materially to the dissolution of the relationship.
With respect to her artistic career, Ms. Savage also addressed the widely circulated designation of “Queen of Afrobeats.” She expressly disavowed the title, stating that to assume such a position would improperly diminish the contributions of other female artists in the genre. In her words, “I just think that if I say that, then what am I—are the other girls who are doing it and killing it not queens? I think we’re all queens.”
Finally, Ms. Savage reflected upon her milestone as one of the first African female artists to be signed to Universal Music Group.
