At the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, Ms. Lady Gaga, aged 39, exited the ceremony shortly after receiving one of the evening’s highest distinctions, the Artist of the Year award.
Upon taking the stage to accept the honor, Ms. Gaga informed the audience that she was required to depart the event prior to its conclusion. She clarified that her departure was necessitated by a previously scheduled, sold-out performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City, situated approximately 20 miles from the event venue at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.
In her remarks, Ms. Gaga expressed regret at being unable to remain for the remainder of the program, stating: ‘I wish I could stay and watch all these amazing performances but I have to go back to Madison Square Garden. Love you. Thank you.’
In her acceptance remarks at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, Ms. Lady Gaga dedicated her Artist of the Year award to her fiancé, Mr. Michael Polansky, before concluding her speech.
At the time of the ceremony, Ms. Gaga was engaged in two scheduled performances at Madison Square Garden in New York City as part of her widely acclaimed Mayhem Ball tour. These performances followed a recent cancellation in Miami due to vocal strain. On the evening prior to the VMAs, Ms. Gaga pre-recorded her musical contribution to the program during her concert at Madison Square Garden. The broadcast featured her renditions of Abracadabra and her new single Dead Dance, the latter originating from Netflix’s Wednesday.
Ms. Gaga is presently touring in support of her album Mayhem, with scheduled performances across the United States and Canada, followed by dates in the United Kingdom and continental Europe.
Her participation in the 2025 VMAs marked her first attendance in five years. She led all nominees with twelve nominations, including Video of the Year for her duet with Mr. Bruno Mars entitled Dying With A Smile. She and Mr. Mars additionally received nominations for Best Pop, Best Collaboration, and Song of the Year for the same work. Her album Mayhem was nominated for Best Album, while the Abracadabra video was recognized in the categories of Best Direction, Best Art Direction, and Best Cinematography.
In total, Ms. Gaga received four awards at the 2025 VMAs: Artist of the Year; Best Collaboration for Die With A Smile (with Bruno Mars); Best Direction; and Best Art Direction for Abracadabra. These honors increase her career total to eighteen MTV Video Music Awards.
This occasion marked the third instance in which Ms. Gaga led the nominations list, having previously done so in 2010 with thirteen nominations and again in 2020, when she tied for first place with nine nominations. Following Ms. Gaga in 2025 were Mr. Bruno Mars with eleven nominations and Mr. Kendrick Lamar with ten. Ms. Taylor Swift, who did not release new music during the eligibility period, was nominated only in the Artist of the Year category.#newsafro_
