Destiny’s Child reunited during the concluding performance of Ms. Beyoncé Knowles-Carter’s Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin’ Circuit Tour, which grossed approximately $387.8 million over the course of 32 dates, culminating in Paradise, Nevada, on Saturday evening.
Ms. Beyoncé, age 43, was joined on stage by former group members Ms. Kelly Rowland and Ms. Michelle Williams for a medley of their early 2000s hits, including Lose My Breath and Bootylicious. However, it was their participation in the performance of Beyoncé’s 2022 single Energy that garnered significant viral attention.
The song, known for initiating the widely recognized ‘Everybody on Mute’ challenge, required audience silence at a key moment. Ms. Rowland (née Kelendria Trene Rowland), age 44, observed several seconds of crowd noise before mouthing the words ‘shut up’ toward the still-vocal fans inside Allegiant Stadium. She immediately followed the gesture with a warm smile, signaling that the comment was made in good humor and not intended to convey genuine displeasure.
The members of Destiny’s Child most recently reunited in person on November 21st for the opening night of Ms. Michelle Williams’ Broadway production, Death Becomes Her, held at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City.
However, the group—originally disbanded in 2005—had not delivered a live performance together since Ms. Beyoncé Knowles-Carter’s headlining set at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California in 2018.
Ms. Kelly Rowland has acknowledged that her emotionally expressive and high-energy disposition has, at times, limited her attendance at her 10-year-old son Titan Jewell Weatherspoon’s basketball games. Speaking on The Jennifer Hudson Show in January, the four-time Grammy Award-winning artist stated: ‘I had to pull back from some of the games. I’m the spirited mom.’ She further shared that her husband, Mr. Tim Weatherspoon, has occasionally advised her to refrain from attending due to the potential for heightened emotional reactions, noting, ‘It’s really great though because it’s teaching [Titan] sportsmanship.’
Ms. Rowland and Mr. Weatherspoon, her former manager and current spouse of 11 years, are also parents to a younger son, Noah Jon Weatherspoon, aged four.
In May of the previous year, Ms. Rowland garnered viral attention after confronting a red carpet usher at the Cannes Film Festival during the premiere of Marcello Mio. Video footage, paired with lip-reading analysis by TikTok user @tismejackieg, captured her addressing the staff member with the following remarks: ‘Don’t talk to me like that. You are not my mother, and you don’t talk to me like that. I’m not a child.’ The same usher was also documented making physical contact with other guests, including Dominican actress Ms. Massiel Taveras and K-pop artist Yoona.
This incident followed a separate occurrence two months earlier, when Ms. Rowland reportedly exited the set of NBC’s TODAY after taking offense during an 8:00 a.m. segment. According to TheWrap, Ms. Rowland and her team were dissatisfied with the line of questioning—particularly the emphasis on Beyoncé-related topics over her own work—during an interview conducted by co-anchor Ms. Savannah Guthrie. Ms. Rowland had been scheduled to co-host the fourth hour of the program (TODAY with Hoda & Jenna) in place of Ms. Jenna Bush Hager but departed Studio 1A at Rockefeller Center prior to the appearance.#newsafro_
