Ms. Sydney Sweeney underwent a significant physical transformation for her portrayal of historical figure Margret Wittmer in the initial trailer for Eden, a survival thriller directed by Mr. Ron Howard and produced on a reported budget of $50 million. The trailer was officially released on Wednesday.
Ms. Sweeney, aged 27, is widely recognized for her glamorous public image and prominent role in the television series Euphoria, where she is often presented in accordance with the conventional “Hollywood blonde” archetype.
In Eden, Ms. Sweeney assumes the role of Mrs. Margret Wittmer, a German national who, while four months pregnant, relocated in 1932 to Floreana—the southernmost island in the Galápagos archipelago—accompanied by her spouse, Mr. Heinz Wittmer (portrayed by Mr. Daniel Brühl), and her stepson, Harry (portrayed by Mr. Jonathan Tittel).
According to reports, Ms. Sydney Sweeney performs a notably intense childbirth sequence in Eden, during which her character, Mrs. Margret Wittmer, is depicted defending herself from feral animals at the onset of labor. Subsequently, Margret is shown giving birth to both a son and a daughter while residing on the remote South American island.
As the narrative progresses, the isolated settler community becomes increasingly aware that the primary danger confronting them is not the region’s harsh climate or its perilous wildlife, but rather the interpersonal tensions among the inhabitants themselves. This shift in dynamic is exemplified by the characters of Ms. Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrhorn (portrayed by Ms. Ana de Armas) and Dr. Friedrich Ritter (portrayed by Mr. Jude Law), who escalate hostilities by resorting to firearms.
In a moment of foreshadowing, Eloise issues a dire warning to Dr. Ritter, stating: “Trust me, by this time next year, one of us will be gone. I personally hope it’s not you.”
In Eden, Ms. Ana de Armas, a 37-year-old Cuban actress, portrays a wealthy aristocrat styled as a “baroness,” who is depicted in one scene engaging in a sexually explicit encounter involving herself and two male companions in the ocean.
The film also features a foreboding moment wherein an unidentified individual is shown forcefully pushing another person from a steep seaside cliff.
Within the narrative, Ms. Sydney Sweeney’s character, Margret Wittmer, expresses concern to her husband Heinz Wittmer, stating: “They’re trying their best to ruin us.” She reassures him with the response: “They won’t, because we are a family.”
Historically, Mrs. Margret Wittmer passed away in the year 2000 at the age of 95 and was interred on Floreana Island. Her legacy includes the expansion of the settlement there and authorship of the autobiographical work Floreana: A Woman’s Pilgrimage to the Galápagos, published in 1959.
Ms. Sweeney assumed the role of Margret Wittmer in 2023, replacing Ms. Daisy Edgar-Jones, who withdrew from the production due to scheduling conflicts arising from her obligations to Twisters amid the SAG-AFTRA labor strikes.
It is notable that the character of Margret Wittmer was previously voiced by German actress Ms. Diane Kruger in the 2013 documentary film The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden, directed by Mr. Daniel Geller and Ms. Dayna Goldfine.
During a Q&A session held at the Eden premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, Ms. Sweeney expressed admiration for director Mr. Ron Howard, stating:
“It’s every actor’s dream to work with Ron. I grew up loving your films, but being able to work with you, I have just learned what an amazing human being you are.”
Reflecting on the role, she added:
“When Margret came to me, I was absolutely amazed by it being a true story. It wasn’t her choice—she had to follow her husband’s path, and she had no idea what she was getting into. She was just a child at that point.”
“It was such a complex character journey for her and for all the other characters. I absolutely wanted to immerse myself in it. And to work with such an exceptional cast—this is truly a dream project, and I feel incredibly fortunate.”
To date, Eden has received a mixed-to-negative critical reception, reflected in a 57% approval rating based on 30 reviews aggregated by the website Rotten Tomatoes.
The feature film, formerly titled Origin of Species, is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on August 22. In addition to lead performances by Ms. Sydney Sweeney, the cast includes Ms. Vanessa Kirby, Mr. Felix Kammerer, Mr. Toby Wallace, and Mr. Richard Roxburgh.
Prior to the release of Eden, audiences will have the opportunity to view Ms. Sweeney in the role of Penny Jo Poplin, a waitress from South Dakota, in Mr. Tony Tost’s modern-day western titled Americana, which is set for release in the U.S. on August 15.
The Lionsgate-distributed crime thriller—formerly known under the working title National Anthem—also features performances by recording artist Halsey, Mr. Paul Walter Hauser, Mr. Eric Dane, and Mr. Simon Rex.
Ms. Sweeney, a native of Spokane, Washington, who was raised in Los Angeles, recently reprised her breakout role as Ms. Cassie Howard in the third season of the HBO original series Euphoria. The series, consisting of eight episodes, is executive produced by and stars Ms. Zendaya in the role of Ruby “Rue” Bennett.
The upcoming season of Euphoria, created by Mr. Sam Levinson, is expected to expand its cast to include Ms. Sharon Stone, international music artist Rosalía, former NFL player Mr. Marshawn Lynch, and actor Mr. Kadeem Hardison.
In addition, as of January, Ms. Sweeney has been actively engaged in the dual role of executive producer and lead actress in a forthcoming feature-length adaptation of Ms. Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel The Housemaid. Directed by Mr. Paul Feig and produced under Lionsgate, the film is expected to premiere during the 2025 Christmas season.#newsafro_
