Opera singer and Strictly Come Dancing contestant Wynne Evans, aged 53, has announced his engagement to long-term partner Liz Brookes. Mr. Evans disclosed via his official Instagram account on Tuesday evening that he proposed over the weekend during a private and romantic visit to Morocco.
The engagement follows a period of professional turbulence for Mr. Evans. Over the past six months, his career has experienced notable setbacks, reportedly stemming from a controversial remark made during preparations for the Strictly Come Dancing tour in January.
In a social media post shared on Tuesday evening, Mr. Wynne Evans published several photographs documenting the occasion of his engagement, including an image of himself in the act of proposing and another of Ms. Brookes’ engagement ring.
Accompanying the images, Mr. Evans wrote:
“Big news… I got engaged!
This weekend in Morocco, amidst the couscous, the camels, and my own somewhat disoriented navigation of the souks, I proposed to Liz — and she accepted. (Her consent has been confirmed and is, to my knowledge, irrevocable.)
She is intelligent, compassionate, and, notably, possesses excellent judgment in romantic partners. I remain unsure how I managed to secure her affections, but I am immensely grateful. I feel fortunate, elated, and, admittedly, just the slightest bit self-satisfied.”
Mr. Wynne Evans has been in a relationship with Ms. Liz Brookes, a fitness enthusiast, since early 2024. The couple is understood to have met at a professional event, and Ms. Brookes has reportedly been a consistent source of personal support throughout Mr. Evans’ participation in Strictly Come Dancing during the latter part of 2023.
Ms. Brookes was frequently seen in the studio audience during live recordings of the programme and publicly expressed her admiration and support, notably posting a photograph with Mr. Evans after one episode, accompanied by the caption indicating she was “proud” of his performance.
According to a source cited by The Sun during the broadcast period, “Wynne and Liz met at an event and are taking things slow, but he’s excited about where the relationship might go. He is in a much better place now than when his marriage ended. It’s like night and day — and he is so happy.”
Mr. Evans has publicly attributed improvements in his physical health and wellbeing in part to his relationship with Ms. Brookes. In a podcast appearance in 2023, he remarked, “I go out running with my girlfriend and stuff, and I feel much better for it,” and has further stated that Ms. Brookes plays an active role in helping him maintain a consistent fitness routine.
In May 2025, Mr. Evans confirmed that his professional relationship with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) had been terminated. The decision followed a four-month internal investigation into comments he made while preparing for the Strictly Come Dancing live tour. The BBC opted not to renew his one-year rolling contract, which had been in place at the time of the incident.
Mr. Evans has acknowledged that the controversial remarks—widely referred to in media reports as involving an inappropriate “spit roast” joke—have had a significant negative impact on his professional standing.#newsafro_
