In 2024, Ms. Dakota Johnson was awarded the Golden Raspberry Award (commonly referred to as a “Razzie”) for Worst Actress, in connection with her performance in the commercially unsuccessful motion picture Madame Web.
The 35-year-old actress has since addressed this career setback publicly and has disclosed that she received personal support from a fellow member of the entertainment industry.
During an appearance on the Good Hang podcast hosted by Ms. Amy Poehler, Ms. Johnson — the daughter of actress Ms. Melanie Griffith — revealed that Academy Award-winning actress Ms. Sandra Bullock had privately reached out to her in response to the negative reception surrounding the film.
In 2010, Ms. Sandra Bullock was the recipient of the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress for her role in All About Steve. Demonstrating notable good humor, she attended the awards ceremony in person to accept the distinction.
On a recent episode of Good Hang, a podcast hosted by Ms. Amy Poehler, actress Ms. Dakota Johnson disclosed that Ms. Bullock had contacted her following the announcement of Johnson’s own Razzie award in 2024 for Madame Web. According to Johnson, Bullock sent a voice message stating: “I heard you are in the Razzie club and we should have brunch, we should have a monthly brunch.”
Ms. Johnson, who starred in The Lost Daughter, described her reaction to the message as one of excitement, noting: “I freaked out getting this message from her because she’s so iconic to me, as like a movie star. I was like, ‘Oh my God.’ I was just crazy.”
In the months following the release of Madame Web, Johnson was reportedly at odds with studio executives, having made a series of public remarks that were interpreted as critical of the production. She portrayed the title character in the $80 million Marvel film, which was met with widespread negative reviews from both critics and audiences upon its release on February 14, 2024.
Approximately one month after its premiere, the film had grossed only $40 million in domestic box office revenue, with an opening weekend yield of $15.1 million—among the lowest for a superhero film in recent history.
In the same podcast episode, Ms. Johnson also discussed her work in the Fifty Shades of Grey film franchise, stating that she is “always psyched” to film the series’ intimate scenes.
When asked how she prepares herself mentally for portraying sexually explicit scenes on camera, Ms. Dakota Johnson responded, “I don’t have to. I’m, like, always psyched up for sex.”
She went on to explain that values instilled in her during childhood by her mother, actress Ms. Melanie Griffith, have significantly influenced her professional approach.
“I want to feel good in my body,” Ms. Johnson stated. “If I’m showing my body… my mom raised me to be really, really proud of my body and love my body, so I’ve always felt so grateful for that—especially in my work—because I can use it, and it feels real.”
Ms. Johnson further elaborated that her mother also had candid discussions with her about the importance and sanctity of sex.
“She also talked to me about sex and how precious and important [it is],” she said. “So I guess in my work… it’s something that I feel brave with, and that I feel—when it’s used the right way in a story—it’s important.”#newsafro_
