Social media was flooded with criticism following the song’s release, as disappointed listeners expressed frustration over what they described as a lacklustre return to music. Despite high anticipation for her comeback, the track has drawn sharp commentary for its production, vocals, and overall execution.

Rihanna’s long-awaited return to music has been met with fierce criticism, as fans voiced their disappointment over her new single Friend of Mine. Listeners took particular issue with the track’s repetitive lyrics, centered almost entirely around the title phrase, and criticised everything from the melody to the vocal performance.
