The 2025 Met Gala, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City this evening, proved to be a memorable occasion. Regarded by many as the pinnacle of fashion, the event, held annually on the first Monday of May, draws a host of celebrities who showcase their most opulent outfits at a lavish soirée hosted by Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
This year’s gala was not without its fair share of dramatic moments, including an unexpected pregnancy announcement, a bold star who opted for no underwear, and a rather unfortunate fall—resulting in a night brimming with fashion mishaps, unexpected surprises, and awkward situations.
One of the most shocking incidents of the evening occurred when Kim Kardashian, accompanied by her daughter, North West, made her way from her hotel to the event. As the SKIMS founder approached her waiting vehicle, a security guard inadvertently stepped on the train of her dress, causing a near-fall in front of a crowd of fans and photographers. A visibly upset Kim scolded the guard, glaring at him and gesturing with her hand while muttering something angrily under her breath.
This tense moment was far from the only one that captured attention. Rihanna made headlines when she arrived on the carpet and revealed that she was expecting her third child with A$AP Rocky, debuting her baby bump for the first time.
The star-studded guest list certainly delivered, with Met Gala regulars such as Kendall Jenner, Kylie Jenner, and Hailey Bieber in attendance, alongside unexpected guests like former Vice President Kamala Harris. However, there were also a number of awkward encounters, including between exes Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan, and rumors of a feud between former White Lotus co-stars Aimee Lou Wood and Walton Goggins, who appeared to avoid one another.
As for the fashion, while the event featured a range of stunning gowns and ethereal outfits, there were also several sartorial missteps, bizarre ensembles, and extravagant accessories. One of the most talked-about looks was Halle Berry’s sheer dress, which left little to the imagination, as she opted to forgo underwear entirely.
Another controversial outfit came courtesy of Sydney Sweeney, who wore a simple black cut-out dress. The look was heavily criticized by fans on X (formerly Twitter), with many calling it “dull” and “basic.”
This year’s theme, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, was inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. The theme sought to pay tribute to black dandyism, a European-influenced style that emerged post-Emancipation and reached its peak during the Harlem Renaissance.#newsafro_
