Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has strongly dismissed recent social media rumors claiming he is responsible for the pregnancy of reality TV star Nengi Hampson. The rumors, which have been circulating widely online, falsely allege that Nengi, a former Big Brother Naija contestant, is expecting a child with the governor. Some reports even speculated that the governor has multiple wives, which further fueled the unfounded gossip.
The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Samuel Oredipe, addressed the claims on Facebook, denouncing them as “fake news” spread by “wicked people.” Oredipe clarified that Nengi and Governor Diri’s relationship is strictly professional, with no personal ties beyond her official role as Senior Special Assistant on Girl Child Development, a position she was appointed to in 2020.
Oredipe also suggested that the rumors were politically motivated, aimed at tarnishing the governor’s reputation as his administration marked its fifth anniversary. This debunking of the story serves to protect both Diri’s and Nengi’s integrity from the malicious spread of misinformation.
It’s unfortunate that politicians and public figures often find themselves dealing with such rumors. It also raises questions about the extent to which social media can fuel false narratives and damage reputations—especially in the face of political opposition.#newsafro_
