While Angelina Jolie may have moved on from her third marriage to Brad Pitt, the actress revealed she remains close to her first husband, Jonny Lee Miller.
At the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Wednesday, the 49-year-old actress was presented with the Maltin Modern Master Award. During her conversation with film critic Leonard Maltin, Jolie reflected on her career, beginning with her 1995 film Hackers, one of her early roles where she first met Miller.
During her appearance at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Angelina Jolie shared a lighthearted moment when reflecting on her past with her first husband, Jonny Lee Miller. “I was just saying to somebody, it’s really funny because I think you’re starting with Hackers, right?” Jolie remarked, before adding with a smile, “Yeah, it’s Jonny. I just talked to him. I love that — I get to see my ex-husband with 2,000 people.”
After a clip from Hackers was shown, she continued, “Amazing. It’s so nice to see it. Actually, it’s funny, I don’t really watch my own films, and so I [haven’t] seen it since the premiere. But I do have a wonderful relationship with Jonny, and he and I have sons the same age and I’m so happy.”
Angelina Jolie and Jonny Lee Miller were married in March 1996, but their relationship ended in February 1999, with their divorce finalized in early 2000. This divorce came shortly before Jolie’s three-year marriage to Billy Bob Thornton, which lasted from 2000 to 2003.
Miller, who went on to star in Trainspotting a year after Hackers, later settled down with actress and model Michelle Hicks. The couple married in July 2008 in Malibu and have a 16-year-old son, Buster, who is roughly the same age as Jolie’s son, Knox Leon. However, Miller and Hicks separated in 2016, and their divorce was finalized in 2018.
In 2021, Jolie made headlines when she visited Miller’s apartment in New York City. The visit was notable not only for the public interest but also because their sons, Buster and Knox, are reportedly good friends. During the same period, Jolie praised Miller in an interview with The Guardian, recalling how he supported her during a challenging time. She revealed how she had to escape from disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and how she confided in Miller, saying, “I remember telling Jonny, my first husband, who was great about it, to spread the word to other guys – don’t let girls go alone with him.”#newsafro_
