James Corden and Ruth Jones, the actors behind Smithy and Nessa, have articulated the definitive reason why Gavin & Stacey cannot return for further episodes. Their comments were made during the documentary A Fond Farewell, which aired on Wednesday evening following the highly anticipated Christmas Day finale special.
The finale marked the conclusion of a five-year wait for viewers eager to discover the fate of the beloved characters, including whether Smithy would accept Nessa’s proposal.
The pair finally united at the conclusion of the episode, a resolution that left fans elated. However, their union also serves as the primary reason why no additional episodes of the show will be produced.
During the documentary, James Corden explained: “Probably from the first Christmas special we did, when Dave proposes and Smithy says, ‘Don’t marry him,’ it felt inevitable that they had to end up together. That was always the direction.”
He further elaborated, “In this last scene, Smithy says, ‘I know it’s messy and not perfect, but that’s because we’re messy and not perfect,’ capturing the essence of their journey.”
Ruth Jones further elaborated, stating: “When Smithy and Nessa got together, that truly marked the end, because we can never depict them actually together. Seeing Smithy put the bins out—it just wouldn’t work.”
Following the final episode of Gavin & Stacey, fans were treated to a farewell through the BBC documentary A Fond Farewell. Airing just a week after the Christmas Day special, the hour-long programme offered an emotional reflection on the sitcom’s legacy.
The documentary delved into the making of the highly anticipated finale, revisited the show’s origins, and celebrated its remarkable 17-year run.
From the outset, viewers expressed their overwhelming emotions, with posts on X confessing: “I’m already a mess one minute in.” Others admitted to being in “floods of tears” as they grappled with the reality that the beloved series had come to a definitive close.
