Connie Nielsen looked stunning at the Gladiator II premiere on Wednesday night, as the 59-year-old actress returned to the iconic franchise 24 years after her role as Lucilla in the original Gladiator in 2000. Joining the new cast alongside Paul Mescal and Yuval Gonen, Connie captivated onlookers on the red carpet in a striking baby blue pleated chiffon gown, featuring a semi-sheer skirt and a daring thigh-high slit.
The Danish actress complemented her halterneck gown with matching satin heels, styling her hair in soft, loose waves that added to her timeless look.
Gladiator II is set several decades after the events of the original film and follows Lucius, Lucilla’s son, who is now residing in Numidia, a region in North Africa.
In Gladiator II, Lucius returns to Rome after being sent to Numidia as a child, reuniting with his mother Lucilla and facing intense conflicts along the way. Connie Nielsen is one of only two original cast members reprising their roles, alongside Derek Jacobi as Gracchus. Lucilla plays a pivotal role in the film, and Nielsen shared that director Ridley Scott’s vision was a significant reason for her return.
Reflecting on her experience, Nielsen described filming as “an amazing process,” recalling the surreal feeling of stepping back into the arena. She expressed enthusiasm for portraying Lucilla’s character arc, shaped by Scott’s direction: “I was so excited to tell the story of this woman who Ridley set up to embody a crumbling empire, the legacy of her father, the loss of a son, and the love of an incredible man, played by Pedro Pascal. And then to have her reconnect with her son… these are powerful emotions and experiences Ridley designed for me. How could I not be excited?”
The film, two decades in the making, has already received critical acclaim, with particular praise for Paul Mescal’s performance. Mescal joined Nielsen at the premiere, looking sharp in a classic black suit paired with a cream satin shirt.
In Gladiator II, Paul Mescal takes on the role of Lucius Verus, the former heir to the Roman Empire, in this eagerly awaited blockbuster. His co-star Yuval Gonen, who portrays Arishat, made a striking appearance at the premiere in a white gown with a corseted bodice. Pedro Pascal, 49, showcased his fashion-forward style, pairing an oversized black shirt with tailored trousers.
Early critical reviews have hailed Gladiator II as “the best movie of the year” and a “true epic,” singling out the powerful performances by Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington. In this installment, with Maximus (Russell Crowe) long deceased, it is Lucius who must fight for his freedom. After being enslaved and separated from his wife and daughter by General Marcus, played by Pascal, Lucius embarks on a journey of vengeance and survival.
Adding to the on-set drama, Mescal revealed a heated bet he made with director Ridley Scott over a daring stunt, which sparked a significant argument between the two during filming.
