A survivor of the Bayesian yacht disaster revealed that the crew “saved who we could” as the vessel sank, resulting in the deaths of seven people, including billionaire Mike Lynch.
The British tech mogul, 59, and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who was set to begin her studies at Oxford University in September, were among the victims who tragically lost their lives when the yacht sank.
Matthew Griffiths was among the 22 people aboard the Bayesian when it was struck by a freak waterspout just a few hundred meters from Porticello port in the early hours of August 19.
The 22-year-old, who was on watch duty during the night of the tragedy, informed investigators that the crew did everything in their power to save those aboard the Bayesian, according to comments reported by the Italian news agency Ansa.
Griffiths, along with the boat’s captain, James Cutfield, and ship engineer, Tim Parker Eaton, have been placed under investigation by Italian authorities for potential manslaughter and shipwreck. It is important to note that being under investigation does not imply guilt and does not necessarily mean that formal charges will follow.
Ansa reported that Griffiths said, “I woke up the captain when the wind was at 20 knots (23 mph). He gave orders to wake everyone else.”
