Dear Mr. Chancellor,
I am bewildered, angry, and stunned—and I am not alone.
Your recent decision to withhold the annual winter fuel payment from approximately ten million pensioners has sparked such intense outrage that it cannot be ignored any longer. This issue has reached a boiling point, and a response is urgently required.
You have made a mistake—one that is apparent to you, to me, to many Labour MPs, and to the entire nation. It is crucial that you acknowledge this error without delay.
Failure to do so risks alienating an entire generation from voting Labour again. What you have done is far from demonstrating prudence or care; it has instead cast you in the role of a modern-day Cruella de Vil, financially squeezing those you should be supporting.
This is an inauspicious beginning for you and your party, especially given your recent assurances to retirees about “retirement security” as we approach the general election.
You need to recognize your mistake and address it as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Jeff Prestridge
