Bloomberg’s billionaire index as of August 20th 2024, has Johann Rupert and Family listed higher than the Nigerian billionaire, Aliko Dangote.
This is not the first time the South African billionaire is holding the title. Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote has been on the top spot for over a year now but not steadily, as both men continue to outpace each other.
Earlier last year, Aliko Dangote had a firm lead on the richest people’s ranking in Africa with $20 billion, higher than Johann Rupert by over $7billion on the second place.
Dangote’s net worth declined in June to $10.8 billion from $13 billion, which had earlier fallen from $20 billion, simultaneous with Johann’s jump to $12 billion, showing a battle for the top between the two African giants.
The margin between both African giants have been so slim since June, 2023, at any given point any of them could be the continent’s richest person.
As at 20th August 2024, Johann Rupert opened with a net worth of $13.9 billion, a last change in valuation reading +$322 million and his year-to-date (YTD) +$1.51 billion, he has been declared the world’s 1533rd richest person.
Dangote, on the other hand as at 20th August has a current net worth of $13.4 billion a last change in valuation of -$527 million and a year-to-date (YTD) -$1.71 billion, making him the world’s 161 st richest person.
It is hopeful that Dangote would regain the title, with a net worth of $13.7 billion following his recent oil refining business.
